Serving pints, craic and music since the 1880’s

about us

a little potted history

We’re led to believe that there’s been a trading bar on the site of The Roaring Donkey since the 1880’s. Located at Top of the Hill in Cobh, it was known as “The First and Last” for many years as it was the first pub you came to as you entered Cobh, and the last one as you left. Mick and Annette took it over in the 1980’s, raising their family there with all four children becoming mighty pint pullers. The mantle was then handed to the next poor eejits, Killian and Joanne, who also subjected their kids to pulling pints when what they really wanted was to be out drinking pints.

Killian and Joanne sweated blood and tears to extend into “the back room” whilst still retaining the feel of the original pub, following that a few years later with the addition of the beer garden –  a wonderful sun trap (well, this is Ireland in fairness so it’s also a rain trap) where you can enjoy a relaxing time with friends.

The Roaring Donkey is well known for its traditional music sessions on Wednesday nights (and quite a few Sundays) and for hosting up and coming musicians of all genres from rock and roll to cover versions. We are also avid rugby union supporters and show every live game we can with our order of love and devotion being Munster, Ireland and LaRochelle (don’t ask!).

We’d love you to come and join us – just pop in and say hello.
